I have been interested in electronics from a very early age. One of my earliest Christmas presents was a home-made board that my Dad built with switches, lights, and a battery. I can remember playing with it for many years after I received it.
At School I found the electronics part of the Physics course very interesting and enjoyable, and by the time I reached Grammar School I was already repairing televisions, radios, and so on as a hobby. In the Sixth Form I took an A/O Level in Electronics (1 year course).
At University I studied Physics in the first two years, taking the Electronics course as my option, but in the final year I converted to a Physics with Electronics degree. My final year project (with a colleague whom I still jokingly refer to as "Boss") was to design a processor-controlled domestic heating system which reduced running costs and had self-learning facilities so that each room could be at the right temperature at the right time, regardless of the weather.
From University I started in the world of real work at Thorn-E.M.I. in Hayes in Middlesex, relocating to Crawley in Sussex when parts of the Hayes site were closed. I was working in the Automatic Test Equipment section, developing in-circuit test (ICT) and functional test programs for radar equipment throughout my time at Thorn, before being made redundant (along with another 250 people).
I then worked at Telspec in Kent for 5 years, progressing from Test Engineer to Test Engineering Manager during my time there, and then moved to Dataflex in Surrey, assuming the many-faceted role of Production/Test and Quality Manager. Both these companies are in the telecommunications/telephony sector.
